OHE (ovariohysterectomy) and Dog Menstruation

by Reader Question and Suggestions From Our Veterinarian

Reader Question: I am thinking of getting my female dog spayed (OHE), my question to you is whether she will still experience the symptoms like blood spotting, behaviour changes when she is on heat again, will she have heat symptoms at all again in life or no?

Suggestion From Our Veterinarian

Hello,

Most veterinarians remove the uterus and both ovaries when they spay a female dog. This procedure (an ovariohysterectomy or OHE) should completely eliminate blood spotting and any behavioral changes associated with your dog’s heat cycle.
