Male Labrador Fertility at 6 Years of Age
by Aaron Followed by Suggestion From Our Veterinarian
(Texas)
I am looking to breed our six-year-old full blooded Labrador female with a friend's dog. The dog is also a purebred Labrador.
I am curious to know how fertile he is at six-years-of-age.
Any information you have will be helpful.
Thanks,
Aaron
Comments From Our Vet on Breeding a 6-Year-Old Labrador RetreiverHi Aaron,
Assuming that your lab is in good health, his fertility should be in the normal range at six years of age.
I strongly recommend you get a feel for all that is involved with the responsible breeding of Labrador Retrievers before you proceed, however.
This breed is afflicted by more than its fair share of genetic disorders. At a minimum, all potential breeding animals should be tested for
hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and exercise intolerance and collapse.
Take a look at
The Labrador Retriever Club’s website to get a feel for all that is involved in breeding these dogs in a way that promotes their well-being.
